Nice post Sean! I totally agree with all your points. I get this question a lot...having been a social media enthusiast for 4-5 years now. I tell them exactly what you mentioned! Spot on!

Excellent post Sean. You hit the nail right on the head with this piece. I am finding the same issues. Companies and associations realize they must participate in Social Media to compete but can't quite wrap their arms around how to integrate it into their business.

I have gone the learn it from scratch, combined with learn it from others route. Yest it is time intensive, but blogs like yours help tremendously. Thanks for another great blog post.

Bill,

I agree with getting the it's vs its. Funny thing is I just read an article yesterday discussing this. This morning I actually hit publish instead of save ...should not write blog articles at 5AM. I'll look to edit it later today.

Pet peeve: "its" is the possessive of "it". The contraction of "it is" is "it's".

Hi Sean,

Brilliant article and probably the most common problem we wrestle with for our clients.

I should explain netLinked is the UK’s first business networking and lead generation group built around training and supporting members to exploit the LinkedIn website to grow their businesses. We launched on November 30th 2009 and currently have six groups in the South of England and a growth potential that is breathtaking.

I thought your three routes to exploiting social media were spot on but that still leaves the problem of that conversion from “something I will look at when I get the time” to “this activity is so important to my business that it is now part of my daily business routine”.

In the UK it is very much a ‘chicken and egg’ problem hence the birth of netLinked but I would be interested in how you, with all your experience and your readers deal with persuading businesses to take that ‘leap of faith’ and get involved with an activity which, in the main, is not seen as key to business growth, in the UK sitting in front of a computer is not generally seen as ‘networking’.

Thanks again Sean and keep it rolling!
