Great post, Sean. I'm new to the site and appreciate the advice about how to approach prospects on LinkedIn. Up to this point, I've generally made sure that I've met face-to-face or have spoken on the phone with someone I reach out to and was curious as to the proper etiquette on connecting.

Peter,

Thanks for the comments. There are cultural differences on LinkedIn, but the ideal is always to have more of a connection. sometimes its possible sometime you just have to wing it.

Predominantly my prospecting success has come from opening dialogue through Groups. I think the principles are the same but in the UK I think you have to create more of a relationship than just a 'connect' before expecting people to talk to you on the phone. Enjoyed the article thanks.

Great article with priceless information. I've been working with Linkedin in stages,
Stage 1)Establishing credibility through participation as a web developer amongst my peers.
Stage 2)Sales prospects.
Stage 3)Monetizing my services.

Thanks,
